In our maths teaching at Whitley Lodge First School we aim to promote enjoyment and engagement by learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion.
We implement a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics and endeavour to embed the belief that all pupils have the potential to succeed. We develop fluency, confidence and competence with numbers and the number system through rapid recall of facts and by regularly revisiting and retrieving facts whilst strengthening key mathematical concepts.
We use a wide range of concrete materials and pictorial representations to enable pupils to show their understanding of different calculation strategies and we develop conceptual understanding in order to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning tasks in a wide range of contexts. Our ultimate goal is to help children understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life and to foster a lifelong love of maths and learning.
