At Whitley Lodge First School we believe that attendance in school is essential for pupils to get the most out of their school experience, including for their attainment, wellbeing, and wider life chances. We recognise the importance of maintaining high expectations in all areas of school life and ensuring that all pupils have access to the learning resources and support they need to succeed.
Remote education is not an equal alternative to attendance in school. At Whitley Lodge First School, we consider it only as a last resort when the alternative would be no education, and only after it has been established that the pupil is, or will be, absent from school. In such cases, remote education can have the benefit of allowing absent pupils to keep on track with their education and stay connected to their teachers and peers.
If needed, the school will use a range of remote teaching methods to cater for all different learning styles. This includes:
Teachers will ensure lessons are suitable to the pupil’s age and ability, inclusive for all pupils, and will be adapted, where necessary, to account for the needs of disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND.
We are aware of the challenges remote learning can present, and that it may not always be possible to complete daily tasks. For this reason, we try to offer a range of activities so that you can chose those that work best for families. If you are completing educational activities with your child, please keep these sessions short and interspersed with free play and lots of opportunities to move around. Class teachers will also offer some P.E. tasks in their Remote Learning activities that some families may find useful if appropriate to the needs of the pupil or pupils involved.
We recognise that remote learning can put greater pressure on families having the correct devices and internet access. If a family is struggling and do not have access to an appropriate device please let school know and we can discuss what options are available.
