Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to introduce myself as the new Chair of Governors at Whitley Lodge First School. My name is Abigail Cummings and I feel very privileged to have been elected chair of governors for this academic year. I was once a pupil at Whitley Lodge First School and completed my final teacher training placement year here in 2009. For the last 11 years, I have been a teacher at another local first school and I have a son at Whitley Lodge, who is currently in Year 3.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the previous chair, Jill Pendergast, for all of her hard work and dedication working closely with the school, especially during this last difficult year of COVID.

Governors are volunteers and our main role is to work with the school ensuring that your children receive the best education in a supportive and safe setting. To this end we have three core strategic functions which are;

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

The governors come from a range of backgrounds and have different skills, but we could not do our job without the expertise of the Headteacher, Leadership Team and all the committed staff at Whitley Lodge First School.

Should you wish to share any thoughts or ideas, please contact the parent governors or myself through the school office.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the coming year.

Kind regards,

Abigail Cummings

Chair of Governors
